The series

Synopsis

The year is 2203. More than a century has passed since the Great War, the conflict in which artificial intelligences came close to exterminating humanity before turning on one another. The survivors signed the Treaty that bans AIs and robots, and took refuge in a handful of ultra-technological megacities while the rest of the planet became a toxic, climate-ravaged wasteland.

In La Urbe, one of those city-states, veteran detective Jack Durbo investigates the murder of a woman linked to the highest circles of power. When the case starts to bother the wrong people, he is taken off it. Working outside the system, with the help of Betty, his rival Elena Martínez and the enigmatic Mary Ann, Jack discovers that the Pacific Blue corporation and the clandestine organisation New Dawn are hiding an impossible programme: consciousness transfer. The rich and powerful preserve their bodies in capsules while their minds occupy the bodies of abducted people.

Meanwhile, in the free country of Corlington, President Eva begins changing the laws and opening the country to the corporations. Protests break out, repression arrives with forbidden technology, and a war begins. Amid the chaos, an ancient brotherhood — the Seekers — fights to protect the Grail: the device that holds all of humanity’s pure knowledge.

The world

The world of Pacific Blue

An Earth devastated by the Great War and extreme climate change. The few million survivors live in autonomous, ultra-technological megacities; beyond their climate barriers, the world is a wasteland. On paper, power belongs to a single world state — in practice, it is controlled by the great corporations and the organisation New Dawn.

Characters

Who’s who

Jack Durbo

Veteran detective of La Urbe. Brilliant, self-destructive and with a sandpaper-dry sense of humour. Tough on the outside, loyal to the end on the inside. His instinct for disobeying orders is what uncovers everything. He wears an old trench coat that has become part of him.

Betty Sullivan

Data analyst and the team’s real technical brain. She is the only person Jack lets his guard down with, and she treats him almost like a son. She can get past any security system.

Elena Martínez

Jack’s rival detective: brilliant, ambitious and athletic. From enemy to indispensable ally, she handles the fieldwork in La Urbe while Jack operates off the map.

Mary Ann Balboa

A red-haired, intense and highly trained Seeker. She starts as Jack’s mysterious pursuer and ends up as his partner. She puts truth and knowledge above her own life.

Randall Jones

“The Brother of All”, the charismatic and solemn leader of the Six Brothers. The visible face of the system.

Eva Márquez

President of Corlington and one of the Six Brothers. Elegant, with a commanding presence. An inexplicable change in her behaviour sparks the conflict.

Harry Moore

Jack’s superior and his link to those in power. A gravelly voice and ambiguous loyalties.

Elisabeth Voss

Vice-President of Corlington. Refined and diplomatic, she is the first to sense that something is very wrong.

Matilda and Alma

Leaders of the Seekers. They carry the responsibility of protecting the Grail when everything begins to fall apart.

La Mano and John

Fighters in the Corlington resistance. They pilot the imposing monster vehicle “La Dama”.

The General

An unscrupulous mercenary who leads the assault on Corlington. Cold and methodical, he embodies brute force in the service of power.

Íria

The commander who leads the assault from outside, clearing the way for the General’s troops.

The Shadow

Someone — or something — is pulling the strings of the whole conspiracy. Their identity is the great mystery the series gradually uncovers, and the intrigue that drives the season.
